Tuesday Meeting: 22nd September

Apologies for not being able to make the Tuesday meeting this month. My thanks to Luke for taking the following notes…

The Tuesday meetings are still going strong! Last night we had a very healthy turn out of ten people with four pieces to critique. Industrious as we are, we managed to get through all four critiques quick enough to have an extra half hour down the pub.

Wednesday Meeting: 9th September

Another fantastic meeting last night with nine people attending and all six DropBox submissions critiqued by the end. It’s still early days but I think the twice-monthly meetings are working well. We’ve had a great turnout at both meetings so far with maybe 1 or 2 fewer submissions per meeting. That means we’re finishing on time without anyone missing out and we’re getting through more critiques.

Wednesday Meeting: 9th September

We seem to have agreed upon a slight modification to the ‘pen spinning’ house rule, as follows:

  1. We start by critiquing those DropBox submissions carried over from the previous meeting.
  2. Then we critique any new submissions from writers who didn’t have anything critiqued during the previous meeting.
  3. Then we critique everything else.
  4. We spin a pen or toss a coin in any or all of the above cases, if need be.

This actually sounds a lot more complex than it is. In most cases there’s no need to spin a pen at all, it’s immediately obvious which submission we should start critiquing.

Let me know if you have any further comments about this change. I’ve updated the House Rules (rule #7). I’ve also added some further clarification about erotica (rule #15).

Tuesday Meeting: 25th August

Last night’s meeting was a success! We had ten attendees and we easily managed to discuss four submissions. It felt a lot like the usual Wednesday. I think that gives us the green light for twice-monthly meetings. Roll on next month!

Meeting: 25th August

Terence wasn’t able to make it last night so his submission, Earthfall, will be carried over to the next meeting on Wednesday 9th September. I’ve updated the Next Meeting and About pages to reflect the changes to the meetings. We probably need a few tweaks to the House Rules but we’re still discussing some of the finer points.

Missing August Meeting and Twice Monthly Meetings

Where did the August meeting go? Well, it still happened but I was zooming around the USA on holiday so I wasn’t around to take notes or update this blog. If I get the chance to catch up with my fellow writers at the next meeting I’ll add some notes to this post. Meanwhile, here’s a slightly blurry picture of me standing in the Bradbury Building and holding a certain book. Thanks to Eric for suggesting that I visit this place on my way through LA.

The Bradbury Building

I’m also happy to announce that we are now running two meetings per month: on the fourth Tuesday of each month as well as the usual second Wednesday. Our group has become increasingly busy this year and we felt it was the right time to expand. This is something that was starting to bubble away before I disappeared off-grid. My thanks to Graeme for making this happen.

Meeting: 8th July

Last night’s meeting was, I think, the second busiest we’ve ever had with 16 people attending with two new members: Quentin and Elliot. A warm welcome to both of you. And thanks to Luke and Quentin for the cake and biscuits. Happy Birthday Eliza!

Meeting: 8th July

Before we get started I just want to thank everyone for the concise delivery of last night’s critiques. We comfortably managed to discuss 4 pieces which is around 60 critiques in total. That’s well above the usual maximum of 50. Well done. Keep it up! Continue reading

Meeting: 10th June

Hi everyone! Another busy meeting last night with 12 people attending. 10+ seems to be our new summertime average so I would once again advise everyone to keep critiques to a manageable length. We overran on time during our fourth round when we should have finished on time. Don’t rush your critiques but please be considerate of others. You could prepare a bullet point list of 3 or 4 discussion points — perhaps 5 at the most — to frame your delivery.

Could I also remind everyone to save work into DropBox as a DOC file and to add your name to the filename as well as the first page and the header of every page (along with the title and page number). Please re-read the rules.

OK, nagging over!

Meeting: 10th June

We had a single submission carried over from last month’s meeting with another four new submissions making for five in total. With 12 people attending we were unlikely to discuss all of these but we managed four during the meeting itself and I think most people accepted an offer from Chris to discuss his short story over at Common afterwards. Meeting: 13th May

Hi everyone! Fantastic meeting last night with 14 people attending and that included 3 new members. I’d like to offer a warm welcome to Niall, Hans and Ian. You delivered some great critiques — just remember to balance your constructive criticism with positive feedback. There’s always something good to say about every piece of writing. The term we often use is ‘Crit Sandwich!’, a slightly nicer variation of that other popular phrase.

Meeting: 13th May

We had 5 pieces of work to critique last night, however Terence emailed beforehand to say that he’d either be late or wouldn’t be able to attend. Terence, no worries, your piece will be carried forward to next month’s meeting.

On with the critiques! Continue reading
